Mexico 1878-Do TB 8 reales
This specimen was lot 74629 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1878-Do TB. Durango Mint. NGC MS-61. A nicely struck coin, with flashy luster and bold dark rainbow peripheral toning. A very attractive example of the type for the holdered grade." Altho the Durango mint never achieved the mintage totals of Zacatecas or Guanajuato, most of the dates after 1873 are available or common. Of the two assayers for 1878, assayer PE is priced slightly higher than TB. The Durango mint closed in 1895. Other mints for 1878 include Chihuahua, Culiacan, Alamos, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Hermosillo, Mexico City, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas.
Recorded mintage: 409,000 (assayers PE and TB).
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
