This specimen was lot 70826 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1879-Pi MR. San Luis Potosi Mint. NGC MS-61. SCARCE assayer. Soft in appearance, this unusual Mint State example of the date exhibits delicate luster with pale pastel-hued tones accompanying both sides. The only example graded at this level by NGC with a mere three pieces deemed finer." Assayer MR is listed for the San Luis Potosi mint for 1879-80 and 1886-93 along with assayer MH (1873-85) and BE (1879 only). The 1879-MR is scarce, the 1879-BE is somewhat scarce and the 1879-MH is common. An 1879/8 overdate is reported.
