Mexico 1879-Cn D peso
This specimen was lot 41223 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $1,620. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Peso, 1879-Cn D. Culiacan Mint. NGC MS-62. A crudely produced RARE date which displays several areas of incompleteness around the edge dentils as well as some pebbling from die rust in the fields surrounding the 1 in the denomination. Despite the apparent crudeness, rather choice for the issue, with a sharp strike and limited handling in the gleaming, reflective fields. Presently only surpassed by a single MS-63 in the NGC census and the finest we've seen offered at public auction, the next finest being an ICG-graded MS-61 that brought $1,750 hammer in a 2008 auction." This specimen is a rare date of a series struck 1869-1905 at the Culiacan mint. Mexico City is the commonest mint, followed by Guanajuato, Culiacan, Zacatecas (scarce), Hermosillo (rare), Alamos (rare) and Chihuahua (rare). Even the common dates have low mintages but the type was widely hoarded, making it reasonably available today. Numerous date varieties exist.
Recorded mintage: unknown but few (<1,000).
Specification: 1.69 g, 0.875 fine gold, .047 troy oz AGW.
