Mexico 1879-As L 50 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers sale of the Kirk Menczer Collection, lot 72200

This specimen was lot 72200 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $145. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 50 Centavos, 1879-As L. Alamos Mint. NGC VF-35. Second finest of only two examples graded by NGC. Scarce date. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Decimal Minors." The Alamos mint struck this silver fifty centavos 1875-81, 1884-85 and 1888 and is accounted a better mint. The mintmark varied between "A" and "A^S"; the latter is shown here.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a somewhat scarce date.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, 30.5 mm diameter, reeded edge.
