Mexico 1879-Zs S 5 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers sale of the Kirk Menczer Collection, lot 71217

This specimen was lot 71217 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $240. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Centavos, 1879-Zs S. Zacatecas Mint. NGC AU-58. Finest of just two examples graded by NGC. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Decimal Minors." The Zacatecas mint struck this type 1870-97 and it is considered a common mint, tho this is a somewhat better date. Assayer "S" is listed for 1876-86 and an 1879/8 overdate is reported. The mint was closed in 1905.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a somewhat scarce date.

Specification: 1.35 g, 0.903 fine silver, 14 mm diameter, reeded edge.
