Mexico 1879-Pi E 25 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers sale of the Kirk Menczer Collection, lot 72166

This specimen was lot 72166 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 25 Centavos, 1879-Pi E. San Luis Potosi Mint. NGC AU-58. Finest of only three graded at NGC, other example is VF Details. Rare two year assayer. Almost certainly the finest known for both date and assayer. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Decimal Minors." The San Luis Potosi mint this silver twenty-five centavos 1869-90. The 1879-P^I H is reasonably common but the 1879-P^I E is rare, perhaps the key for this mint.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a rare date.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.903 fine silver, 25 mm diameter, reeded edge.
