Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70921

This specimen was lot 70921 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1876-Zs JS. Zacatecas Mint. NGC MS-61. Tied for second finest certified of date/assayer with one other example on the NGC population report, on three finer (MS 62). Wholly original looking and very attractive, this nicely preserved example displays lovely delicate dove gray patina with pleasant iridescent sheen that pops out when tilted in the light. Truly RARE in this condition." The Zacatecas mint is tied with Guanajuato as the most prolific mint during the Republic and most of the eight reales struck 1825-97 are common, as is this one. Production for 1876 was shared between assayer JA (1874-76) and JS (1876-86). No varieties are reported in the SCWC for the year.
