This specimen was lot 72191 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 50 Centavos, 1876-Pi H. San Luis Potosi Mint. PCGS MS-65. By far the finest certified at either service for this VERY SCARCE date and mintmark combination, and possibly the best known example from the entire series that was struck at San Luis Potosi. Highly lustrous and bright satin surfaces show attractive antique silver tinting and blushes charcoal patina here and there around the peripheries. The eye appeal is simply outstanding, as is the technical quality. A spectacular example destined for the most acclaimed of specialist cabinets." This type was struck at San Luis Potosí 1870-87 and many of the dates are common but this one is scarce. In addition, this type is extremely rare in choice condition from any mint.
