For earlier Austrian issues for Italy, see Italy, Milan. The Austrians ruled the duchy of Milan 1714-97 and later added the duchy of Mantua. They lost both to Napoleon in 1797 but received Venice in compensation. At the Congress of Vienna, Venice, Milan and Mantua were merged into the kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia and awarded to Austria. Lombardy fell to Sardinia in 1859 and Venetia to Italy in 1866.
