Künker sale 352, lot 1661

This specimen was lot 1661 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €4,000 (about US$5,567 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KAISERREICH ÖSTERREICH, Franz Josef I. 1848-1916. Dukat 1865, V, Venedig. GOLD. RR Kratzer, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, ducat of 1865, Venice mint. Rare, marks, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type was issued 1860-65 from the Venice mint during the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria. This type was also minted at Vienna, Kremnitz (Komoczbanya in Magyar) and Karlsburg and is often catalogued under Austria. After the reorganization of the Hapsburg empire into the Dual Monarchy in 1867, Hungary received her own coinage separate from Austrian issues. In the aftermath of World War One, the Hapsburg monarchy collapsed and Hungary became independent but without its former territories in Slovakia, Transylvania and Croatia.

Recorded mintage: 34,346 for 1865-66, a scarce date.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, 19.8 mm diameter, this specimen 3,44 g in gold.
