Sincona sale 80, lot 3181

This specimen was lot 3181 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 1,400 CHF (about US$1,678 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA, Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916. Dukat 1866 B, Kremnitz. Rare. Only 76,000 pieces struck. NGC MS63." This type was issued in 1866 from the Kremnitz (Komoczbanya in Magyar) during the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria. This type was also minted at Vienna, Karlsburg and Venice and is usually catalogued under Austria. After the reorganization of the Hapsburg empire into the Dual Monarchy in 1867, Hungary received her own coinage separate from Austrian issues. In the aftermath of World War One, the Hapsburg monarchy collapsed and Hungary became independent but without its former territories in Slovakia, Transylvania and Croatia.
