Sincona sale 54, lot 1054

This specimen was lot 1054 in Sincona sale 54 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$476 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916. Dukat 1867 E, Karlsburg. Sehr schön. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, ducat of 1867, Karlsburg mint. Very fine.)"

This type was struck 1867-72 only but is common. Gold ducats were struck throughout Franz Josef's long reign and come in many types. This date is known from Vienna, Kremnitz and Karlsburg (shown here).

Recorded mintage: 361,975, a common date.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, .109 troy oz AGW, 19.8 mm diameter, this specimen 3.47 g.
