Austria 1867-A thaler Dav-26
This specimen was lot 4931 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €320 (about US$440 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KAISERREICH ÖSTERREICH, Franz Joseph I., 1848-1916. Vereinstaler 1867 A, Wien. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung eines sächsischen Naturwissenschaftlers. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, union thaler of 1867, Vienna mint. Handsome patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
In 1866, Austria was kicked out of Germany after the Austro-Prussian war and in 1867, the emperor was forced to share his power with the Hungarians in the Ausgleich. Thereafter, the country was known as Austria-Hungary. This type was struck 1866-67 and was the second type struck to the vereinsthaler standard (18.52 g, 0.900 fine). The thaler was dropped after 1868 and in 1892 the corona was adopted.
