Künker sale 406, lot 3888

This specimen was lot 3888 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,837 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KAISERREICH ÖSTERREICH, Franz Josef I. 1848-1916. Dukat 1868, GYF, Karlsburg. 3,44 g Feingold. GOLD. Vorzüglich. (empire of Austria-Hungary, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, ducat of 1868, karlsburg mint. Extremely fine.)"

This type of 1868-69 is rather scarcer than prior types despite the substantial mintage. Ducats were struck for Hungary as late as 1881 but this is likely to be the last issue of the Karlsburg mint.

Recorded mintage: 127,531.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold.

Catalog reference: KM 448.2, Fr-238; J. 355; Schl. 31.
