Künker Auction 425, lot 1423

This specimen was lot 1423 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,399 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Franz I., 1804-1835. Sovrano 1828 M, Mailand. Feingold. GOLD. R Attraktives Exemplar, vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, Francis I, 1804-35, sovrano of 1828, Milan mint. Rare, attractive example, extremely fine.)"

This denomination was originally introduced for circulation in the Austrian Netherlands, where it was called the souverain d'or. It was struck in Milan 1820-31, Vienna 1822-23 and 1831 and in Venice in 1822. The kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia was assembled by the Austrians to provide a unified administration for the Italian territories under their rule. This comprised the former duchies of Milan and Mantua and the republic of Venice. Austria ruled Venetia until 1866, when it passed to the new kingdom of Italy.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.

Specification: 11.33 g, 0.900 fine gold, 25.4 mm diameter, this specimen 10,20 g.
