Sincona sale 26, lot 3649

This specimen was lot 3649 in Sincona sale 26 (Zürich, October 2015), where it sold for 2,800 CHF (about US$3,459 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916 5 Kreuzer 1858. Venedig. Von grosser Seltenheit. Vorzüglich-FDC. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, five kreuzer of 1858, Venice mint. Of the highest rarity, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was struck at Vienna, Kremnitz, Milan and Venice 1858-64 tho only the Vienna issues are common. Venice, long an independent republic, was handed to Austria by Napoleon in 1797, then taken away again in 1805, then return to them after his fall in 1815. The Austrians held it as part of the kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia until 1866, when it became part of Italy.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a very scarce date.

Specification: 1.33 g, .375 fine silver, 16 mm diameter, this specimen 1.34 g.
