Sincona sale 97, lot 2059

This specimen was lot 2059 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 1,600 CHF (about US$2,321 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH, Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916. Vereinskrone 1858 E, Karlsburg. Selten. Sehr schön. Fassungsspuren. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, union crown of 1858, Karlsburg mint. Rare, Very Fine, Traces of mounting.)"

The krone was also minted by Saxony (KM 1197), Hannover (KM 232), Prussia (Fr-2437) and Bavaria (Fr-280) but does not seem to have been a success, as survivors are few. This issue, minted 1858-65 at Vienna, Milan, Venice and Karlsburg, is rare. The Austrians dropped the krone after 1865.

Recorded mintage: 30,736.

Specification: 11.11 g, 0.900 fine gold, 24 mm diameter, this specimen 11.09 g.

Catalog reference: KM 2253, Divo/S. 257. Herinek 216. Fr-229 (listed under Hungary).
