Sincona sale 97, lot 2060

This specimen was lot 2060 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 100 CHF (about US$145 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH, Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916. Vereinstaler 1858 A, Wien. Gutes vorzüglich. Leicht gereinigt. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, thaler of 1858, Vienna mint. About Uncirculated, lightly cleaned.)"

This type was struck at Vienna (shown here), Kremnitz (mintmark "B"), Karlsburg ("E"), Milan ("M") and Venice ("V") in 1857-65. It is the first vereinsthaler struck in Austria (18.52 g, 0.900 fine). After 1867, Bismarck forced Austria out of German affairs and the Hapsburgs thereafter had little reason to conform to German monetary conventions. The thaler was dropped after 1868 and in 1892 the corona was adopted.

Recorded mintage: 7,008,701, the highest mintage date.

Specification: 18.52 g, 0.900 fine silver, 33 mm diameter, lettered edge, this specimen 18.52 g.
