Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1859-B krone Fr-750
This specimen was lot 3650 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,134 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM Wilhelm, 1831-1884. Vereinskrone 1859, B. GOLD. Vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, William, 1831-84, gold union crown of 1859, extremely fine.)"
In 1856, the ducat was dropped in favor of this gold krone issued 1857-64. The krone was also minted by Austria (KM 2253), Saxony (KM 1197), Hannover (KM 232), Prussia (Fr-2437) and Bavaria (Fr-280) but does not seem to have been a success, as survivors are few. This issue, minted 1858-59, seems to be the most common after Austria. The krone was dropped in favor of the gold twenty mark after unification in 1871.
