Künker sale 264, lot 3642

This specimen was lot 3642 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €8,000 (about US$10,335 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH Friedrich Wilhelm IV. 1840-1861. Vereinskrone 1858, A. GOLD. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Polierte Platte, leicht berieben. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William IV, 1840-61, gold union crown of 1858. Very rare in this quality, proof, lightly hairlined.)"

In 1855, the friedrichs d'or was dropped in favor of this gold krone issued 1858-60. The krone was also minted by Saxony (KM 1197), Hannover (KM 232), Bavaria (Fr-280) and Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (Fr-750) but does not seem to have been a success, as survivors are few. The krone was dropped in favor of the gold twenty mark after unification in 1871.

Recorded mintage: 6,320.

Specification: 11.11 g, .916 fine gold, this specimen 11.12 g.

Catalog reference: Divo/S. 170; Fr-2437; Schl. 632; Olding 361, KM 476.
