This specimen was lot 32187 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $9,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Saxony. Johann gold Proof Krone 1857-F PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC, Dresden mint. Struck in a limited mintage of 3,580, with an anecdotal survey of auction appearances suggesting a moderately to significantly lower rate of survival than this figure. Exceedingly sharp, with a luxurious cameo contrast completing the appeal, this jewel represents the only selection seen by NGC to-date. From the Caranett Collection." The krone was issued in Austria (KM 2253), Hannover 1857-62, Prussia 1858-70 (Fr-2437), Bavaria (Fr-280), Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel and Saxony 1857-71. Despite being minted in substantial numbers, none are common today, most likely having been melted to make ten and twenty mark after the reform of 1871. This rare type was struck 1857-71. Based on the gold content, this coin was worth 1-11/16 of a Prussia friedrichs d'or.
