Saxony 1857-F 2 thaler Dav-996
This specimen was lot 389 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 13,000 CHF (about US$19,812 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen, Herzogtum, ab 1547 Kurfürstentum, ab 1806 Königreich, Johann, 1854-1873. Doppelter Vereinstaler 1857 F, Dresden. Fleissprämie der Bergakademie zu Freiberg. Sehr selten. Nur 100 Exemplare geprägt. Prachtvolle Erhaltung mit herrlicher Patina. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar. (Germany, kingdom of Saxony, John, 1854-73, double union thaler of 1857, Dresden mint, prize for the mining academy at Freiburg. Very rare. Only 100 specimens struck. NGC MS63, Beautiful condition with magnificent patina, Finest certified by NGC.)"
This is more of a medal than a coin but it is traditionally listed as a double thaler and appears in Davenport (as a "pseudo-thaler") and the SCWC.
Recorded mintage: 206 with initial "B" plus 100 with initial "F".
Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver.
