Künker sale 352, lot 1845

This specimen was lot 1845 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €6,500 (about US$9,046 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich Wilhelm IV. 1840-1861. 1/2 Vereinskrone 1858, A. GOLD. RR Nur 2.036 Exemplare geprägt. Prachtexemplar. Fast Stempelglanz aus polierter Platte. Erworben 1954 bei der Firma Grabow, Berlin. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William IV, 1840-61, half union crown of 1858. Very rare, only 2,036 examples struck. Choice example, about uncirculated on polished planchet. Bought from Grabow in 1954.)"

In 1855, the friedrichs d'or was dropped in favor of the gold krone. The krone was also minted by Austria, Saxony (KM 1197), Hannover (KM 232), Bavaria (Fr-280) and Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (Fr-750) but does not seem to have been a success, as survivors are few. The krone was dropped in favor of the gold twenty mark after unification in 1871. This half krone was struck 1858-A only.
