Austria 1857-B 1/4 florin
This specimen was lot 5528 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €320 (about US$414 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KAISERREICH ÖSTERREICH, Franz Josef I. 1848-1916. 1/4 Gulden 1857, B, Kremnitz. Feine Patina, kl. Belagfleck, fast vorzüglich. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, quarter florin of 1857, Kremnitz mint. Fine patina, small stains, about extremely fine.)"
When Bismarck kicked Austria out of Germany after the war of 1866, German and Austrian coins began to diverge. The thaler was abandoned in 1872 for the florin, which in turn was superseded by the corona in 1892. This quarter florin was struck 1857-59 at Vienna (A), Kremnitz (B, shown here), Karlsburg (E), Milan (M) and Venice (V). Many dates are common.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.
Specification: 5.34 g, 0.520 fine silver, 23 mm diameter, this specimen 5.32 g.
