Lombardy-Venetia 1853-M lira
This specimen was lot 3177 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$480 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA, Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916. Lira 1853 M, Mailand. Uncirculated." This type was struck for the kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia in 1852 at Venice and in 1853-58 at Milan. It is very scarce despite being a five year type. Twenty soldi made a lira and six lire made a scudo. At the Congress of Vienna, Venice, Milan and Mantua were merged into the kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia and awarded to Austria. Lombardy fell to Sardinia in 1859 and Venetia to Italy in 1866.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
