This specimen was lot 21241 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Lombardy. 40 Lire, 1848-M. Milan Mint. NGC MS-62. One year type. Attractive for the grade with lively luster in the fields and mostly soft forms of handling that determine the grade. SCARCE in certified Mint State." The type was issued by the provisional government of Lombardy during the European wide revolts of 1848 which, among other events, nearly toppled the Hapsburgs in Vienna. The Milanese had to wait until 1859 for liberation from Austrian rule. Besides the twenty lire shown here, the provisionals issued silver five lire (Dav-206) and gold twenty lire pieces (Fr-475).
