Aureo sale 242, lot 287

This specimen was lot 287 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 340 € (about US$528 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Fernando VII (1808-1833). 1811. Zacatecas. 2 reales. Flores y Castillos. Leves golpecitos. Buen ejemplar. Rara y más así. MBC+. (Ferdinand VII, 1808-33, two reales of 1811, Zacatecas mint, flowers and castles type. Nice example, light nicks, rare thus, choice very fine)."

This specimen is one of a series minted 1811 in Zacatecas during the reign of Ferdinand VII. The mounting anarchy unleashed during the War of Independence forced the royal authorities to open branch mints, such as Zacatecas, Guanajuato and Durango. This design was also used for one real and eight reales issues. The date is somewhat scarce and rare well struck. A variety exists with the date upright (KM 187). The Zacatecas mint closed in 1905.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.896 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-15428, KM 186, Cal. 1062.
