Künker sale 353, lot 3718

This specimen was lot 3718 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabruck, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €45 (about US$63 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. Ku.-1/4 Stüber 1754, C, Cleve. Prägung für die westlichen Landesteile. Mit Kleeblatt zwischen 2 Weinblättern im Abschnitt der Vorderseite. Sehr schön. Erworben am 2.11.1982. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, copper quarter stuiver of 1754, Cleve mint, struck for the western provinces, with a clover leaf between grape leaves on the obverse. Very fine.)"

The stuber, or stuiver, is a denomination familiar to Dutch collectors but not so often seen in German coins. Cleve, in the far west of Germany, near the Dutch border, struck this type 1753-55 along with the Aurich mint in East Friesland. The SCWC notes that one thaler was thirty or 54 stuber, depending on which thaler one used.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, this specimen 3,20 g.

Catalog reference: KM 55 (listed under Cleve), Olding 285 b; Kluge 285.2.
