Künker sale 353, part of lot 3597

This specimen was lot 3597 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €30 (about US$42 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. Ku.-3 Pfennig 1754, F, Magdeburg. Prägung für die Mark Brandenburg. Sehr schön. Erworben am 12.3.1986 von Manfred Olding, Osnabrück. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, copper three pfennig of 1754, Magdeburg mint, struck for the mark of Brandenburg. Very fine.)"

While it may seem perfectly normal for us to use low value coins struck from base metal, in the eighteenth century it was still a strange concept in many lands. The government of Prussia went to great lengths to issue small coins with a least a trace of silver but gave up in the face of rampant counterfeiting. This type was struck sporadically 1752-61 but was not a success. In 1764, the regime went back to striking billon three pfennig (KM 293).

Recorded mintage: 5,760,000 for 1752-61. This is a scarce date.

Specification: 7.31 g, copper, 26.5 mm diameter, this specimen 6,98 g.

Catalog reference: KM 267, Olding 175; Kluge 209.
