Morton & Eden sale 104, lot 581

This specimen was lot 581 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £300 (about US$465 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Decimal Coinage, 5 centavos, San Luis Potosí mint, 1869 S, good very fine, very rare." The Potosi mint struck silver five centavos 1863, 1868-81, 1886-93. Nearly all of the dates before 1877 are scarce to rare. Two types are noted for 1869: 1869-P (KM 397.1, cap and ray reverse), 1869-Pi S (KM 398.9, value reverse, shown here). Both are scarce to rare, with the 1869-P being slightly better.

Specification: 1.354 g, .903 fine silver, .0393 troy oz ASW, this specimen 1.34 g.
