Zacatecas 1812 8 reales KM-191

from Stack's Bowers 2016 ANA sale, lot 21172

This specimen was lot 21172 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $705. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. War of Independence. Zacatecas. 8 Reales, 1812. NGC AU-55. Moneda Provisional. Armored bust. The single finest graded (by at least 10 points) of the 7 pieces seen at NGC. A high grade example of this crudely produced coinage, with a remarkably clear portrait and a flan free of problems. For the type, about as nice as they come, and a coin sure to attract admirers as it heads to auction." This type and its cousins (KM 189 thru KM 192) were issued 1810-12. Later, the royalists obtained better equipment and minted Ferdinand VII bust 8 reales (KM 111.5, 1813-22) in large quantity.
