Künker sale 354, lot 5772

This specimen was lot 5772 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €550 (about US$766 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKFURT, STADT, Vereinsdoppeltaler 1854. Attraktive Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, city of Frankfurt, double union thaler of 1854. Attractive patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was struck by the free city of Frankfurt am Main 1841-47, 1851, 1854-55. Its face value of two thalers was equal to 3½ gulden. City view thalers (KM 326) were issued concurrently 1840-44. Frankfurt was annexed by Prussia in 1866 and her coinage ceased.

Recorded mintage: 72,000, a better date.
