Sincona sale 23, lot 2155

This specimen was lot 2155 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 280 CHF (about US$352 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Hessen-Darmstadt, Landgrafschaft, ab 1806 Grossherzogtum, Ludwig III. 1848-1877 Doppelter Vereinstaler 1854. Darmstadt Sehr schön. (grand duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, Louis III (1848-77), double union thaler of 1854, Darmstadt mint, very fine.)"

This one year type is expensive. The grand duke of Hesse-Darmstadt dropped the "-Darmstadt" from his title when Hesse-Cassel was annexed by Prussia in 1866.
