from the Stacks Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 20589

This specimen was lot 20589 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Nassau. 2 Talers, 1854. NGC MS-64+. Sharply struck and delicately toned with velvety smooth luster and a single tiny mark in the field below the 'N' in 'NASSAU' that surely prevented MS-65 certification." Most double thalers are rare and expensive but this one, struck 1844 and 1854, is only scarce. The year 1854 seems to have been the peak of popularity for the denomination. The duchy was annexed to Prussia in 1866 and her coinage ceased. Adolphe later became grand duke of Luxembourg (r. 1890-1905).
