This specimen was lot 763 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$615 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Nassau, Herzogtum Adolph, 1839-1866. Doppelter Vereinstaler 1840. Lt. ger. Vorzüglich. (Duchy of Nassau, Adolph, 1839-66, double union thaler of 1840. Lightly cleaned, extremely fine.)"
This type of 1840 has a low mintage but is only scarce, suggesting that it was somewhat saved. The duchy was annexed to Prussia in 1866 and her coinage ceased.
Recorded mintage: 56,000.
Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, 1.074 troy oz ASW; this specimen is 37,09 g.
