Hesse-Darmstadt 1840 2 thaler Dav-702
This specimen was lot 5272 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,000 (about US$1,292 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HESSEN-DARMSTADT, LANDGRAFSCHAFT, SEIT 1806 GROSSHERZOGTUM, Ludwig II. 1830-1848. Vereinsdoppeltaler 1840. Prachtexemplar. Herrliche Patina, fast Stempelglanz. (landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt, Louis II, 1830-48, double union thaler of 1840. Outstanding example, handsome patina, about uncirculated.)"
This type was issued 1839-42 and is fairly expensive, considering its substantial mintage. Hesse struck coinage to the unified empire standard after 1871.
Recorded mintage: 367,600.
Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, 1.074 troy oz ASW, lettered edge, this specimen 37.10 g.
