This specimen was lot 75046 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hesse-Darmstadt. Kreuzer, 1841. Ludwig II. PCGS MS-64." This type was struck 1837-42 and is common. One convention thaler was two gulden or 120 kreuzer. The landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt was promoted to grand duke by Napoleon in 1806 and his state survived until 1918. His rival, the elector of Hesse-Kassel, entered the Austro-Prussian war of 1866 on the Austrian side and saw his domain annexed to Prussia as a result.
