This specimen was lot 40123 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,265. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hesse-Darmstadt. 5 Gulden, 1842-CV HR. NGC AU-55. Demarete Collection." This type of 1835 and 1840-42 is scarce to rare. Hesse struck coinage to the unified empire standard after 1871.
