Sincona sale 6, lot 714

This specimen was lot 714 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 2,700 CHF (about US$3,322 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Hessen-Darmstadt, ab 1806 Grossherzogtum 10 Gulden 1842. Vorzüglich-FDC. (grandy duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, ten gulden of 1842, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type of 1840-42 is scarce to rare. Hesse struck coinage to the unified empire standard after 1871.

Recorded mintage: 17,000 for 1840-42.

Specification: 6.85 g, .904 fine gold, .199 troy oz AGW; this specimen is 6,74 g.
