This specimen was lot 25137 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hesse-Darmstadt. 10 Gulden, 1840-CV HR. Darmstadt Mint. Ludwig II. NGC AU-53. Mintage: The first year in a brief three-year series, this lightly handled example presents a brilliant golden-olive hue with a great deal of luster emanating from the protected areas. From the Augustana Collection." This type was struck 1840-42. This example sold for about half the catalog value.
