Sincona sale 18, lot 1414

This specimen was lot 1414 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 3,200 (about US$4,216 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"10 Gulden 1827. Darmstadt Selten. Vorzüglich. (grand duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, ten gulden of 1827, rare, extremely fine.)"

This denomination, like all the gold issues of Hesse-Darmstadt, is rare and expensive. Ludwig was originally landgrave Ludwig X but became grand duke Ludwig I in 1806. This type is noted for 1826-27.

Recorded mintage: 1,705.

Specification: 6.85 g, .904 fine gold, .199 troy oz AGW, this specimen 6.75 g.
