Ponterio sale 173, lot 1285

This specimen was lot 1285 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $705. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Reuss-Schleiz. 2 Taler, 1840-A. NGC EF-45. Heinrich LXII (1818-54)." Reuss was one of the splinter states of Saxon Thuringia and itself underwent several divisions. Many rulers were named Heinrich and several lines consolidated their numbering, resulting in this prince becoming Heinrich the sixty-second. This type was struck 1840, 1844, 1846, 1853-54 at Berlin and is very scarce.

Recorded mintage: 2,650.

Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, 40 mm diameter, lettered edge.
