Saxony 1840-G 2 thaler Dav-874
This specimen was lot 822 in Jean Elsen list 269 (Brussels, July-August 2014), where it was offered for €650 (about US$884). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, SAXE, Royaume, Friedrich August II (1836-1854), AR double Taler, 1840 G, Belle patine. Superbe (kingdom of Saxony, Frederick August II (1836-54), silver double thaler of 1840. Nice patina, extremely fine.)"
This double thaler was struck in the kingdom of Saxony 1839-54. Most double thalers are rare but this type is fairly common, coming from a silver-producing state. Friedrich August II was king of Saxony 1836-54. Saxon coinage, after a thousand years of minting, ceased in 1918 with the collapse of the second Reich.
