Sincona sale 33, lot 2237

This specimen was lot 2237 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Hessen-Kassel, ab 1803 Kurfürstentum, Wilhelm II. 1821-1847 Doppelter Vereinstaler 1840. Kassel. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich. Von polierten Stempeln. (Germany, electorate of Hesse-Cassel, William II, 1821-47, double union thaler of 1840, Cassel mint. Rare in this condition, Extremely fine, From polished dies.)"

This type of 1840-45 is fairly scarce, as is most of the coinage of this state, which was annexed by Prussia in 1866.

Recorded mintage: 19,000.

Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, 1.074 troy oz ASW, this specimen 37.16 g.
