This specimen was lot 33682 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Hesse-Cassel. Wilhelm II & Friedrich Wilhelm 2 Taler (3-1/2 Gulden) 1843 MS61 NGC. An exceedingly scarce Double Taler date, with only two populating the NGC census, this example and an AU53 we offered in 2014. Decidedly crisp devices host a uniform gunmetal patination tinged with hints of mottled lavender, elevating the visual character of the piece at hand." This type of 1840-45 is fairly scarce, as is most of the coinage of this state, which was annexed by Prussia in 1866.

Recorded mintage: 18,000.

Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, 1.074 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 600, Dav-693.
