Künker sale 354, lot 5213

This specimen was lot 5213 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €19,000 (about US$26,442 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HESSEN, HESSEN-KASSEL, LANDGRAFSCHAFT, SEIT 1803 KURFÜRSTENTUM, Wilhelm II. und Friedrich Wilhelm, 1832-1847. 10 Taler 1838. GOLD. Sehr seltener Jahrgang. Nur 126 Exemplare geprägt. Prachtexemplar. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, electorate of Hesse-Cassel, William II and Frederick William, 1832-47, ten thaler of 1838. Very rare date, only 126 pieces struck, choice example, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The ten thaler was equal to a Prussian doppelter friedrichs d'or. This type is listed for 1838-41 and this is the rarest of the three dates. The electorate was annexed to Prussia in 1866 and her coinage ceased.
