Künker sale 406, lot 4011

This specimen was lot 4011 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €6,000 (about US$7,873 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HESSEN, HESSEN-KASSEL, LANDGRAFSCHAFT, SEIT 1803 KURFÜRSTENTUM, Wilhelm II. und Friedrich Wilhelm, 1832-1847. 1/2 Dukat 1835. Halber Ederdukat. GOLD. RR Nur 127 Exemplare geprägt. Kl. Randfehler, vorzüglich. Die 127 Exemplare wurden für die Aktionäre der 1832 unter dem Protektorat des Kurprinzen Friedrich Wilhelm und des Fürsten Georg zu Waldeck und Pyrmont gegründeten "Hessisch-Waldeckischen Compagnie zur Gewinnung des Goldes aus dem Edderfluß" geprägt. (electorate of Hesse-Cassel, William II and Frederick William, 1832-47, half ducat of 1835, gold from the Eder river. Very rare, only 127 pieces struck, minor edge nicks, extremely fine. These pieces were minted for the shareholders of the "Hessian-Waldeck Company for the Extraction of Gold from the Eder River", founded in 1832 under the patronage of Elector Friedrich Wilhelm and Prince George of Waldeck-Pyrmont.)"

Hesse-Cassel was swallowed up by the Prussians after the Austrian war of 1866 while Hesse-Darmstadt survived until 1918.
