Hesse-Cassel 1836 thaler Dav-692
This specimen was lot 5271 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,163 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HESSEN-KASSEL, LANDGRAFSCHAFT, SEIT 1803 KURFÜRSTENTUM, Wilhelm II. und Friedrich Wilhelm, 1832-1847. Taler 1836. Prachtexemplar. Feine Tönung, fast Stempelglanz. (electorate of Hesse-Cassel, William II and Frederick William, 1832-47, thaler of 1836. Outstanding example, fine toning, about uncirculated.)"
This thaler was struck 1832-42 in moderate numbers and is slightly scarce. The thaler's weight was reduced to 18.52 g in 1858 but the purity was raised to 0.900 fine. Hesse-Cassel was swallowed up by the Prussians after the Austrian war of 1866.
