Ponterio sale 169, lot 10357

This specimen was lot 10357 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $1,116. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony-Albertine. 2 Taler, 1847-F. NGC MS-63. Toned." This double thaler was struck in the kingdom of Saxony 1839-54. Most double thalers are rare but this type is fairly common, coming from a silver-producing state. Friedrich August II was king of Saxony 1836-54. Saxon coinage, after a thousand years of minting, ceased in 1918 with the collapse of the second Reich.
