Künker sale 263, lot 1296

This specimen was lot 1296 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €550 (about US$711 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-ALTENBURG, HERZOGTUM Josef, 1834-1848. Vereinsdoppeltaler 1847. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, Joseph, 1834-48, union double thaler of 1847. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

Despite the small mintage, enough of this 1841-47 type was saved that it is today only scarce, not rare. It is the only double thaler of this ruler, altho single thalers were also struck (Dav-812).

Recorded mintage: 9,400.

Specification: 37.11 g, 0.900 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-811; AKS 48; Kahnt 481; Thun 353, KM 20.
